Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has declared that Nigeria’s democratic institutions can only deliver meaningful development when driven by visionary, competent and selfless leaders, insisting that leadership founded on integrity and patriotism remains the bedrock of national progress.
The governor stated this on Thursday at the maiden Professor Sam Oyovbaire Public Service Lecture held at the Southern Delta University, Orerokpe Campus, where he paid glowing tribute to the renowned political scientist and former Minister of Information for his enduring contributions to scholarship, public service and democratic governance.
Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Oborevwori described the establishment of the annual lecture as a worthy honour for Professor Oyovbaire, whose intellectual contributions have shaped Nigeria’s discourse on democracy, governance and federalism.
“I congratulate Southern Delta University for instituting this lecture series to celebrate a man whose scholarship and public service have enriched our democratic journey,” the governor said.
Speaking on the lecture theme, “Federal Statecraft without Crafters: The Nigerian Predicament,” Oborevwori said the nation’s greatest challenge is not the absence of institutions but the need for credible leaders capable of driving them effectively.
According to him, no democratic system can succeed without leaders who possess character, competence and an unwavering commitment to the collective good.
“Strong institutions are important, but they can only flourish when guided by men and women of character, competence and patriotism,” he stated.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance through the implementation of the M.O.R.E. Agenda, saying prudent management of public resources, inclusive governance and effective collaboration remain central to sustainable development in Delta State.
He urged participants at the lecture to move beyond academic discussions by translating ideas into practical solutions capable of strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and improving governance across all levels.
Oborevwori also congratulated Professor Oyovbaire on the recognition and commended the management of Southern Delta University for institutionalising the lecture series, describing it as a significant platform for promoting intellectual engagement on national development issues.
The event attracted members of the Delta State House of Assembly, State Executive Council members, Vice Chancellor of Southern Delta University, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, senior government officials, academics, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other distinguished guests.
