Delta State: N3.3 billion property destroyed in 239 fire outbreaks in 2018

The Delta State Fire Service says property worth N3.3 billion were destroyed to fire outbreaks across state in 2018.

239 fire incidents occurred across the state within last year.

The State Director of Fire Service, Eugene Oziwele, who stated this in Asaba, noted that a total of 268 fire calls were recorded while of the number, 29 of the calls were false alarms.

Oziwele added that through the efforts of his men and quick response from the agency, property valued N9.9 billion were saved from fire outbreaks.

He, however, stated that no life was lost in all of the 239 fire incidents recorded.

Giving the break down, the Oziwele said, “The Oshimili local government (Asaba) axis of the state had the highest number of calls with 65 (sixty-five), followed by Warri with 59 (fifty-nine), while Sapele recorded 46 (forty-six) calls.

“Issele-Uku had one call, Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku , had five, Oghara 10 (ten), Kwale 12 (twelve) , Ughelli 13 (thirteen), Ogwashi-Uku station 13 (thirteen) and Agbor 15 (fifteen).”

The fire service director pointed out that no fire incidents was recorded at the Ogbeogonogo and Secretariat posts in Asaba, Effurun, Ogbe Ijoh, Patani, Oleh, Ugbolokposo, Eku and Owa Oyibu area of the state.

“Twenty persons were rescued alive, while no life was lost”, he added.

The Fire Service Director attributed most of the reported cases of fire to bush burning and advised Deltans and other residents of the state to clear the bushes around their houses and public facilities, especially during this dry season.
