The killing of a young man, Mena Otidi, by a police officer has sparked outrage in Delta State, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori condemning the act and demanding justice.
The governor described the incident as barbaric, unlawful and a gross violation of human life, insisting that no citizen should be subjected to such brutality.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Oborevwori expressed sorrow over the killing and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
The officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, is under investigation following the incident, which was captured in a widely circulated video.
Oborevwori, however, commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for approving the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the act.
He said the move signalled accountability and could help restore public confidence in the police.
The governor insisted that all those involved must be brought to justice, stressing that justice must be seen to be done.
He assured that the state government would monitor the case to its conclusion and support the bereaved family.
Oborevwori also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating his administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and the rule of law.
