The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its lingering leadership crisis over, citing a decisive verdict by the Supreme Court of Nigeria which nullified the controversial Ibadan convention that produced a rival faction.
In a statement on Friday, the PDP Delta State chapter said the apex court’s April 30, 2026 judgment effectively killed the Aminu Turaki-led faction and erased claims of a leadership vacuum in the party.
The statement issued by State Publicity Secretary, Chief Kingsley Akpos Oturubo, said, “The judgment has settled the protracted leadership conundrum. With the nullification of the unconstitutional Ibadan convention, there is no factional crisis.”
The party clarified that the court only invalidated the Ibadan gathering and did not upturn internal disciplinary actions, including the one-month suspension earlier slammed on Sam Anyanwu and three others at the party’s 608th National Working Committee meeting on November 1, 2025.
According to the PDP, the suspension elapsed on December 1, 2025, after which the affected members were lawfully reintegrated and appointed into a caretaker NWC on December 8, 2025.
The caretaker body, it added, midwifed the March 2026 national convention recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which produced the current leadership headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
“The leadership of Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed is duly recognised and reflected on INEC’s portal. That is the position of the law,” the statement stressed.
The party dismissed individuals claiming to be members of its Board of Trustees as impostors, insisting that its legitimate BoT is led by Mao Ohuabunwa.
It urged party faithful and the general public to ignore insinuations of instability, assuring that preparations for the 2027 general elections were on course.
“There is no cause for alarm. Those who wish to contest elections on our platform should continue their activities,” the party said.
Projecting confidence ahead of the polls, the PDP vowed to sweep governorship, National Assembly and state assembly seats, particularly in Delta State.
The party also extended an olive branch to aggrieved members and defectors, calling for unity after months of internal wrangling.
“Our party has survived the challenges. We are now firmly in the 2027 race,” it added.
