Concerned Deltans living in different parts of the United Kingdom have staged a peaceful procession in Coventry City, calling for sustained peace and unity in Warri and urging residents to reject violence and divisive politics.
The call came amidst the rising tension in Warri over the Supreme Court-ordered ward delineation of Warri Federal Constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission among the three indigenous tribes – Urhobos, Itsekiri and Ijaw ethnic nationalities
The youths, who described themselves as concerned indigenes and born in Warri before departing the city for green pasture, said the initiative was aimed at promoting harmony and encouraging stakeholders to embrace dialogue.
The event commenced with a novelty football match at Charterhouse Field in Coventry, where members of the Warri community drawn from the three tribes and supporters participated in what organisers described as a symbol of teamwork, friendship and peaceful coexistence.
Following the match, participants embarked on a peaceful procession to Coventry Cathedral, a landmark known for reconciliation and peacebuilding.
The marchers carried placards and wore customised T-shirts bearing inscriptions such as “No to Another Warri Crisis,” “Peace Over Violence,” “Warri Must Be Great Again,” and “Choose Peace, Save Warri.”
Speaking at the event, the convener, Mr Oghenekaro Kenneth Edaah, said the programme was organised to promote peace, unity and hope for Warri’s future.
According to him, the gathering demonstrated that members of the Warri diaspora remained deeply committed to the stability, development and progress of their homeland despite living abroad.
“This event is not just a gathering. It is a statement of solidarity, a call for unity and a reaffirmation that peace is the only way forward for Warri,” Edaah said.
He also commended Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for what he described as his developmental strides across Warri and other parts of the state.
Edaah specifically highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including road construction, flyover projects and the upgrade of the Warri City Stadium, describing them as evidence of the governor’s commitment to development.
The convener further praised Oborevwori’s recent intervention in issues threatening peace in Warri, saying it demonstrated leadership and concern for the wellbeing of residents.
Other participants echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for residents of Warri to remain united and avoid actions capable of triggering conflict.
They said the peace campaign was designed to foster understanding among the various ethnic groups in the area and promote a collective commitment to peaceful coexistence.
The participants also pledged to continue engaging community leaders, stakeholders and residents on the importance of maintaining peace and supporting initiatives that would enhance development in Warri.
According to them, only a peaceful and united Warri can attract investment, create opportunities for young people and guarantee sustainable growth for future generations.
